Computing & Technology Group

The Computing & Technology Group has changed! At the meeting on 13th September, 2017 it was agreed that we would stop regular monthly meetings and replace these with, essentially, an online forum (although we later decided to hold ad-hoc meetings as well, at approximately 3 month intervals). The reasons and rational behind this decision can be found in the notes of the July 2017 meeting below.

A special page has been created where members can post a question and any other member who has a solution or can direct the enquirer to a source of information.

Message page Click here to view.

You don’t currently have to be a group member as any Stowmarket U3A member is free to use the facility, but should you chose to do so you will de-facto, become a C&T Group member.

If you wish to start a new topic or raise a new question – at the top, where it says ‘Comments’, click ‘Add your own……’ and enter your message in the pop-up box. To reply to a question, click the ‘Reply’ just below the post and write in the pop up box, then ‘Send’.

All messages are in reverse chronological order, i.e. latest first.

All messages will be on the same page so in time it will get very long. If you wish to search for a subject or word that you know has been used before, hit Ctrl + F on your keyboard. This is a function in both Chrome and Edge and brings up a dialogue box; enter the word or exact phrase and all incidents where this has been used on the page will be highlighted.

You can include web site addresses in your replies. It’s not possible to include images (say screen shots) directly but if you upload to Google photos and provide the sharing link, that will work.

This is very early on in the development of this new method of communication and due to WordPress restrictions there are somethings we would like to do but are unable.

In the meantime, don’t forget that you can get the answer to almost any Computer/Technology question on the GCF Learn Free site Click here to view. Another excellent, English based, resource is ‘Home and Learn’ Click here to view.

Also, BBC Web wise is a useful source of information Click here to view.

Meeting 11/10/2010 Agenda for the day was….

1) A general discussion on what topics you would like to see covered during the coming months. We have varying levels of abilities in the group from beginner to the rather more experienced. Nobody should be afraid to put anything forward because they think it may be too simple (or indeed too complex!) for the rest.

2) An open session when members will have the opportunity to bring any questions about any topic, be it concerning the web, ‘Office’ programs, photo organizing/manipulation, or whatever, to the meeting. Whatever your query/problem, it is likely that somebody in the room will have experienced it before or, if they haven’t, will be able to tell you how to find the solution. Indeed, we could together search for answers on the web. As above, don’t be afraid to raise any question, we’re all here to help each other.

This resulted in a very interesting meeting with lots of involvement for all parties.

1) The discussion led to a series of ideas and volunteers to take us through the remainder of 2010 and into 2011. (The programme below will be updated as necessary). Although most items are completely new, for the benefit of newer members we decided to revisit one or two topics which have been discussed over the last two years.

2) Open session. The previous discussion led to many questions, resulting with the more experienced sitting down with the less experienced and giving hands on advice on such topics as photo manipulation, drawing distance lines in Google maps, demonstrating Google ‘street view’, and shrinking photos for email.

I would suggest that at future meetings, 15 minutes or so could be devoted to member questions irrespective of the topic for the day.

It was agreed that on the occasions when Stowupland was not available (e.g. August) the meeting would be held in the old venue of the Bowls Club (thanks Harold).
