18 October – Meeting


Tales from the Bench (Graham Higgins)
Graham has been a magistrate since 1988 initially in Cheshire and in Suffolk since 1992. The talk starts with our legal heritage, referring to the part played by Suffolk and Bury St Edmunds. He relates his talk to local events including some of his more unusual experiences on the bench. The talk finishes with a very brief outline of a case for the audience to decide how they would sentence the defendant.

Chocolate (Tony Diamond)
After a brief introduction to the history of Chocolate, Tony talks about the beliefs (factual and nonsensical), amazing myths and areas of ignorance surrounding chocolate.

17 January – Meeting


Confessions of a Church Crank (Roy Tricker)
Roy uses his wicked sense of humour to inform us about churches, including the story of the discussions, deals and wrangles leading up to the creation of Suffolk’s own diocese (and cathedral and bishop) in 1914. This hilarious talk includes some of the ‘closed’ material in the diocesan archives and should prove to be quite a revelation!

OAP Gap Year (Lynn Ready and Marilyn)
Lynn and Marilyn share their story of how two widows, in 2012, backpacked around the world. They talk about some of the weird, fun and daft things that they did.

Haughley Choir and “Pam Ayres”
This consist of themed songs, one or two solos, some humorous verses, including a rendition of Pam Ayres and finishes with a community singalong .

18 April – Acquainting Afternoon


A vintage afternoon tea which gives members an opportunity to relax and chat with friends.

Fingerprinting (David Smith)
David Smith is a retired fingerprint expert who worked for the Metropolitan Police for 40 years. His talk covers the use of fingerprinting in crime scene investigation, the history of fingerprinting and recollections of his career.

Trekking the World for Charity – £10 per mile (Ken Snow)
This is the tale of a pair of walking boots that ended their life on a rubbish heap in Vietnam. They rubbed soles with both celebrities and ordinary folk (just like our members). As well as making friends with people from all around the UK, Ken walked on every continent and many sub continents of the world.
The money raised benefited children of the UK through the charity which started out as “The Waifs and Strays”.
